Aliens in the Heartland
As a young boy growing up in South and Central Florida, I regularly hunted and fished in the Everglades and the surrounding countryside. I have a lot of very fond memories of being deep in the swamps or somewhere out on the rivers and lakes catching Bass, Bluegill or Specks (Crappie). But my how times have changed. You just never know what you’re going to catch out there anymore. On a recent trip to the Kissimmee River, Louie and I caught at least a half dozen of these Mayan Cichlids. These South American fish are now a permanent part of our eco-system here in Florida. It’s like a Bluegill on steroids..
